Why High-Achieving Women Feel Like Frauds
Hi I'm a fraud (as is this framed fake HBR cover).
A few years ago, I made a fake HBR cover—swept up in my own ambition. To be clear, I’m not an expert on the "divine feminine." But I do believe there’s something divine in what makes us deeply human. And the feminine—an essence that exists in all genders—is certainly part of that humanity.
A "fraud" who's never been promoted to the C-Suite of companies (other than the one-woman shop I've been running from my home office for the past decade).
A "fraud" who's yet to be a millionaire herself, even though the cumulative additional income of my coaching clients exceeds millions of dollars.
A "fraud" who never feels 100% confident while I coach women whose degrees, income, and professional accomplishments far exceed mine.
I'm outing myself as a "fraud" because
1. There's so much more to building a sense of ease in your body and an actionable self-advocacy plan as a high-achieving woman navigating a workplace NOT designed with women and minorities in mind.
2. Feeling like a "fraud" is super normal, even for me. The more I coach subject matter experts and executive women, the more I see that imposter syndrome is never an indicator of actual competency or future potential but a hypnotic spell induced by a society steeped in bias against women and minorities.
We can break the spell of this terribly boring hypnosis by co-opting its language.
So there, I'm a "fraud."
And yet my clients achieve results -- confidence, promotions, and raises -- that exceed my own.
Why?
Because I am deeply dedicated to helping women and minorities grow in the unique, sometimes downright unconventional ways that are right for them, not by any other external standards.
Are you a "fraud" in this way, too?
If this resonates, we might be a good fit.
