From Sisterhood Sorcery to Business Barbie in Korea: Interview with Beth and SJ

From Sisterhood Sorcery to Business Barbie in Korea: Interview with Beth and SJ

Let’s be honest—coaching isn’t magic. But sometimes, the space to stop go-go-going and start listening to the wisdom of your deeper mind can unlock some seriously unexpected momentum.

That’s what happened with my client SJ.

She came to coaching feeling lost in the pressure to be liked, to be successful, to do more as the breadwinner to her family of two sons and a supportive househusband.

She’d built an impressive career, but it wasn’t feeling like hers anymore. What she craved wasn’t another strategy session or productivity hack — it was clarity. Permission to be exactly who she is, without apology.

I forgot to hit record on my own video (oops!), so while you’ll see SJ and Beth’s lovely faces in the video interview, you’ll only hear my voice. Still totally worth watching—we get into some seriously good stuff.

Here's SJ in her own words:

Part of the reason I picked Jamie as my executive coach... was her whole thing.

There was something on her website, like, you're tired of pretending to be somebody else...

You want to feel like you. Your voice matters without losing sight of who you are. I was like, yes. I don’t even know who I am anymore besides somebody who's just trying to be liked very, very hard.

In our sessions, we didn’t charge ahead with to-do lists. We slowed way down. We did somatic exercises and hypnotic techniques from Dr. Les Fehmi's Open Focus Brain to help her shift out of frantic overthinking and into a calmer, creative state.

A lot of executive coaches say, 'Do more.' Jamie doesn't do that. Jamie says, 'Let's just talk slower.' Or, 'Let's just take a minute and feel it in our bodies.' And from that comes a lot more clarity.

She has me notice spaces on my body... and by the time I come out of that, she goes, ‘What do you know?’ And I’ll be like, ‘I know exactly what I need to do.

One of my favorite moments? When SJ reframed her ambition—something she’d been taught to see as “too much”—into something joyful and shiny and hers.

Jamie helped me reframe my ambition... not something scary and bad, but something fun and pretty and shiny and fast. That was one of our big moments.

She found her voice again. She also found herself recruited for a Director position and negotiated a competitive salary.

Then came Beth.

SJ loved our work together so much that she referred her sister, Beth, to me for a free consultation.

Beth was laid off and burned out. She told me she was looking for “another job.” But as we spoke, it became clear: what she thought she needed (another corporate gig) wasn’t what her subconscious was yearning for.

So I didn’t make an offer.

It didn’t feel right. And I don’t believe in selling coaching to people who aren’t aligned with it.

Beth later told us she felt a little embarrassed after our Zoom call. But then she started journaling. Soul-searching. Listening to the parts of herself she’d been pushing aside.

Within weeks, she reactivated her therapist license… and was gainfully employed to do play therapy.

Here's Beth in her own words:

I found myself saying something in the consultation with Jamie that’s rumbled around in my mind ever since: ‘What boring thing do I have to do before I can do the fun thing?’ And I thought—oh no, that’s inside me. I don’t want that to be true...

Since then, I reactivated my therapist license, got insurance, and I have a job lined up.
